Acupuncture is a safe, gentle, and natural treatment that has developed over 5,000 years. Acupuncture needles are made of high-grade super fine stainless steel. They have been sterilized and are disposable, with each needle contained in a sterile package. They are much, much thinner than a standard hypodermic needle. In the hands of a trained and experienced acupuncturist, the insertion of needles is a gentle art.
These needles stimulate the circulation of vital energy, called "qi" (pronounced "chee") throughout the body. Promoting the flow of vital energy relieves pain and improves physical function, and mental and emotional balance in a natural, gentle way.
Initially, you may experience a tiny tap or pinch, and then you may feel a tingling sensation or an occasional dull, heavy soreness. These feelings have indicated that you have experienced the essential quality of acupuncture stimulation: the movement of "qi." Once in, the needles are retained for 15 to 30 minutes while you rest comfortably on a table with soft music playing. Most patients find this very relaxing and comfortable. Upon removal of the needles you may feel an overall relaxation lasting for several hours, and some patients experience very distinct feelings of well-being.
You should wear loose fitting clothing, or you may use a treatment gown that we provide. It is best to remove jewelry and not to wear tight-fitting underwear. It is recommended that you have eaten about 2 hours prior to a treatment, but not immediately before. |
