What to expect on your first visit!

Welcome to our comfortable homestyle waiting room, relaxation start here

We set aside an hour to an hour-and-a-half for your first visit to our office. At this appointment you may receive an extensive consultation and examination where we go over your health history, current complaints and past problems, medical records, lifestyle patterns, diet, medications and other relevant health issues.

We will discuss your chief complaints and overall health concerns, emotions and mental processes, obstacles to well being, and what works and doesn’t work for you in life. We invest the time to understand the holistic nature of your health issues. We use diagnostic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine such as pulse and tongue diagnosis and palpation of acupuncture meridians to diagnose the cause of your condition.

This appointment is the most important time to discover what your goals and aspirations may be for acupuncture treatment.  We will answer your questions and describe how acupuncture will work for you, how it feels, and create a treatment plan that will ensure success. We will partner with you to support you in achieving optimal wellness goals.

Your First Treatment

Acupuncture is a safe, gentle, and natural treatment that has developed over 5,000 years. Acupuncture needles are made of high-grade super fine stainless steel. They have been sterilized and are disposable, with each needle contained in a sterile package. They are much, much thinner than a standard hypodermic needle. In the hands of a trained and experienced acupuncturist, the insertion of needles is a gentle art.

These needles stimulate the circulation of vital energy, called “qi” (pronounced “chee”) throughout the body. Promoting the flow of vital energy relieves pain and improves physical function, and mental and emotional balance in a natural, gentle way.

Initially, you may experience a tiny tap or pinch, and then you may feel a tingling sensation or an occasional dull, heavy soreness. These feelings have indicated that you have experienced the essential quality of acupuncture stimulation: the movement of “qi.” Once in, the needles are retained for 15 to 30 minutes while you rest comfortably on a table with soft music playing. Most patients find this very relaxing and comfortable. Upon removal of the needles you may feel an overall relaxation lasting for several hours, and some patients experience very distinct feelings of well-being.

You should wear loose fitting clothing, or you may use a treatment gown that we provide. It is best to remove jewelry and not to wear tight-fitting underwear. It is recommended that you have eaten about two hours prior to a treatment, but not immediately before.Call us at (973) 984-2800 to make an appointment or fill out the assessment form (button below). If we are unable to answer, please leave a message and we will promptly call you back to schedule an appointment convenient for you — the office is open six days and four evenings a week.

Fees, Financial and Scheduling Policies

Fees vary according to health insurance coverage and network participation. We will let you know before you make an appointment what you will be expected to pay.

It is important that we collect payment in full at the time of service. This keeps administrative and bookkeeping costs down. It is our policy to help patients get well and to work with you regarding financial needs.

At the time of your initial consultation and exam, you will be given a clear description of your treatment plan. It is very important that you adhere to the treatment schedule in order to get the optimum results. For instance, we may recommend treatments twice a week for four weeks, then once weekly for six weeks, and then we will re-evaluate your progress and make further recommendations. The office is open six days and four evenings a week so we can accommodate your scheduling needs. Please remember that you must be treated consistently for optimal results.

Therefore, if for some reason you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment call us at least 24 hours in advance and make every effort to reschedule the same week so you do not skip a treatment. This is both a courtesy to us and to our other patients who want to get in for treatment, as well as a vital part of your therapy. If you do not call to cancel or change an appointment, you may be charged a missed appointment fee.

Insurance WE ACCEPT

We are currently providers with the BlueCross/BlueShield/Horizon and United Healthcare family of insurance companies. If you’re a BCBS or United Healthcare policy holder, we will check your plan to ascertain if they include acupuncture benefits.

We are not in-network providers with any other insurance companies, but if you have out-of-network benefits for acupuncture we can provide you with the means to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. We also participate with affinity holistic healing networks that may make you eligible for reduced network rates if you do not have acupuncture benefits. Please contact us for assistance.
