chronic fatigue syndrome

The symptoms of chronic fatigue include malaise, depression, insomnia or a need for excessive sleep, fibromyalgia, weakened immune system, and a wide variety of other complaints. Taken together, they can leave one feeling drained with an inability to fully engage in life and a feeling of constant struggle and a desire to “give up.”

Most medical physicians cannot treat chronic fatigue effectively because there is often no causal agent such as a virus or bacteria or organ disorder. Many CFS patients feel ignored and ill-served by conventional medicine and know that there is more to their disorder than a prescription for anti-depressants.

We have treated many patients with the diagnosis of CFS, either as a primary disorder or secondary to other illnesses. We respect the difficulties inherent in the process of healing from CFS and we use a gentle, holistic approach that includes acupuncture and other modalities. Most importantly we listen to and honor our patients and respond with patience and gentle commitment.

Acupuncture works by stimulating the “qi” (pronounced chee) or the vital energy of the body. Patients with chronic fatigue have often experienced a serious illness, infection or trauma that they have never fully recovered from. This causes a syndrome of chronic weak qi. The internal organs responsible for the production and distribution of vital energy: the kidneys, stomach, lungs, and liver are often weak. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is one of the most powerful natural therapies to treat chronic fatigue. Needles are gently inserted along the body’s meridians to stimulate these organs and to circulate the vital qi throughout the body.

We have treated hundreds of patients over the years who have suffered from chronic fatigue. Most of these patients turn to us because conventional medicine can no longer help them and they feel abandoned by their doctors who often treat them as hypochondriacs. We treat each patient as an individual with unique conditions and needs. Acupuncture often provides dramatic results in just a few weeks’ time.
