Many of my acupuncture patients ask if I recommend they get a flu or shingles vaccination in the fall or winter. There’s a lot of contradictory and confusing information regarding the flu shot and its effectiveness and safety so I’m including these articles that I hope will make it easier for you to make the choice that’s right for you.
I have made a personal; a choice not to get a flu shot. I believe that I am conscious of strengthening my immune system year-round with proper diet, rest, exercise, acupuncture, meditation and herbal supplements and nutrients that I can withstand most viruses and bacteria. Once every few years I will get a head cold or sore throat but with proper rest and care it goes away in 24-48 hours.
I understand that many people do not have a strong constitution or immune system, particularly the elderly and those with chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, allergies, inflammation, etc. Until they have made a commitment to strengthen their immune system over several years they may benefit from a flu shot but of course there’s no guarantee. So please read these articles and I or my associates at ACNJ will be happy to discuss the vaccination options and many natural alternatives that are available. In addition we certainly encourage all our patients to receive regular acupuncture treatments throughout the winter.
