We hear this all the time... but “I’m Scared of Needles!”
Acupuncture is Gentle and Relaxing
One thing I get asked when seeing a patient for the first time or when I meet people and tell them what I do is the question "do the needles hurt?" Many people tell me they’re really interested in trying acupuncture but they have a great fear of needles and think it may hurt like a hypodermic injection.
I start off explaining and showing just how thin and flexible the needles are. The fear of needles often comes from childhood experiences of innocultaions or injections. I am always happy to describe that acupuncture needles are thin like a strand of hair. The needles we us at the Acupuncture Center of New Jersey are made from high-grade stainless steel. They are very easy and quick to insert with a light tap. These needles aresterile and disposable for single-use only. We have given many thousands of treatments over the years with not one incidence of infection or injury.
The sensation most commonly felt with the initial insertion of the acupuncture needle is a little tap or a slight pinch which fades right away. Other sensations that can be temporarily felt for a few seconds are tingling, a warm sensation, or a dull ache or twitch. This is a good sign because it means the needle has stimulated the acupuncture point and created a Qi, or energy response.
Most patients tell me they did not even feel the needles with the initial insertion and throughout the duration of the treatment. The treatment usually lasts 25-30 minutes and our patients relax in a warm room with soothing, meditative music playing. Many go to sleep and almost everyone describes their acupuncture treatment as the most relaxing part of their day.
The best way to overcome the fear of an acupuncture needle is to try a session. Here at the Acupuncture Center of New Jersey in Morristown, we'll talk you through the first session to keep you calm and at ease. With our private rooms and soft background music you will soon be looking forward to your acupuncture treatment! I look forward to seeing you soon.
